Modular deep-sea desalination for sustainable freshwater production

Develops modular, efficient deep-sea water farms that harness natural hydrostatic pressure to power reverse osmosis desalination. This innovative approach reduces energy consumption, eliminates harmful brine discharge, and provides scalable, eco-friendly freshwater solutions for communities and industries worldwide.

TECHNOLOGY / INNOVATION

OceanWell's technology utilizes modular subsea pods deployed at depths of 400 meters, leveraging natural ocean pressure to drive the reverse osmosis process. Each pod can produce up to 1 million gallons of fresh water daily, with a 40% reduction in energy usage compared to traditional methods. The system's LifeSafe™ circulation ensures marine life protection, and its modular design allows for scalable deployment without the need for coastal plants

CURRENT STATUS

OceanWell is actively developing its first water farm in collaboration with the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District in Southern California. The company has completed prototype testing and is progressing through pilot programs, with plans for commercial readiness by 2028.

ORIGINS

Founded by Robert Bergstrom, a veteran in the water industry who previously established Seven Seas Water, OceanWell emerged from a vision to create sustainable desalination solutions. The initial prototype was developed in a home kitchen, reflecting the team's commitment to innovation.

OWNERSHIP

OceanWell is a privately held company, backed by investors including Kubota Corporation, the family office of Jon Hemingway of Carrix Ports, and Charles McGarraugh.

USP

OceanWell's subsea desalination technology offers a sustainable alternative to traditional methods by reducing energy consumption, eliminating harmful brine discharge, and protecting marine ecosystems. Its modular design allows for scalable deployment, making it adaptable to various water demand scenario
